How neurofeedback is reimbursed
Neurofeedback is delivered within occupational therapy as a psychological-functional treatment — not as a separate service.
Statutory health insurance (GKV)
Neurofeedback is not a standalone remedy, but is covered by statutory insurers as a method within occupational therapy.
- Your doctor issues a therapy prescription (Muster 13)
- Prescription: Psychological-functional treatment (indication codes PS1–PS4)
- Alternative: sensorimotor-perceptual treatment (EN1) or cognitive training
- The insurer covers the occupational therapy — neurofeedback is the method within it
- Co-payment: 10% + €10 prescription fee (unless exempt)
Private insurance (PKV)
Billing follows GebüTh (fee schedule for therapists) — the standard path for occupational therapy for privately insured clients. You receive a detailed invoice to submit to your insurer.
- Billing basis: GebüTh (fee schedule for therapists)
- Home visits: covered by most private plans including travel fee
- Computer-assisted therapy: neurofeedback as occupational therapy is covered by many plans
- Prescription: recommended for reimbursement — without time limit (advantage over statutory)
- Clarify in advance: check with your private insurer before starting → checklist with all questions
Beihilfe & self-payers
Beihilfe (civil servants' aid): reimbursement often possible, depending on the scheme — please check with your Beihilfe office.
Self-payers: direct billing according to our price list. You receive an invoice that can be claimed as an extraordinary burden on your tax return.
- No waiting for a prescription
- Immediate therapy start possible
- Package prices save up to €111
The path to neurofeedback therapy
From first idea to first session — an overview of the process.
Free initial consultation
Call or write to me. In 15-20 minutes we clarify whether neurofeedback may be appropriate for you.
Obtain a prescription from your doctor
Statutorily insured: ask your doctor for a therapy prescription (Muster 13) for psychological-functional treatment (occupational therapy). Self-payers / privately insured: a prescription is recommended for private-insurance reimbursement.
History, assessment & symptom tracking
60-75 min first appointment: detailed case history, occupational therapy assessment and start of symptom tracking. Complementary diagnostics if needed.
Regular sessions
1-3 times per week, 60 minutes. You sit relaxed and watch a film — your brain trains itself.
Progress & closing
Review every 5 sessions. Typically 15-30 sessions until the end of therapy. Refresh option after 6 months.
Any doctor can issue a therapy prescription. Most commonly it is prescribed by: paediatricians (for ADHD), psychiatrists / neurologists (for depression, anxiety, trauma), GPs (for burnout, sleep difficulties). Since 2021, psychotherapists can also prescribe for certain diagnoses.
Important for statutorily insured clients: Muster 13 must state psychological-functional treatment (or sensorimotor-perceptual treatment) + ICD-10 diagnosis + indication code (e.g. PS1 for ADHD). The word "neurofeedback" does not need to appear on the prescription.
