💔 Alpha-theta protocol

Trauma & PTSD

Alpha-theta neurofeedback may carefully complement ongoing trauma psychotherapy and support stabilisation as well as the processing of distressing experiences.

What is the alpha-theta protocol?

The alpha-theta protocol is a special neurofeedback approach that works with the hypnagogic state — the transition between wakefulness and sleep, in which the nervous system may be especially receptive to relaxation and inner processing.

It is used in trauma-sensitive support as well as in addiction aftercare. The focus is on alpha and theta waves — frequency ranges associated with relaxation, inward attention and deeper processing.

When may it be supportively useful?

  • For trauma processing — complementary to ongoing trauma psychotherapy
  • For emotion regulation after distressing events
  • For sleep problems related to trauma
  • For pronounced stress reactions or hyperarousal
  • In addiction aftercare, when this is professionally coordinated
Important: Alpha-theta neurofeedback is not an independent trauma therapy. As a rule, it should be used alongside ongoing psychotherapy. If desired, I am happy to work together with your therapist.

What does an alpha-theta session look like?

You sit or lie comfortably with your eyes closed. Instead of a film, you hear acoustic feedback — usually calm sounds that respond to your brain activity.

The aim is a deep, relaxed state in which the nervous system may better support stability and processing. A session usually lasts 50 to 60 minutes and is prepared carefully and discussed afterwards.

Who is alpha-theta suitable for?

Alpha-theta neurofeedback may be particularly appropriate for people with:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Complex trauma
  • Chronic hyperarousal or constant inner tension
  • Sleep disturbances after distressing experiences
  • Emotional dysregulation

Requirement: sufficient stability and ideally ongoing therapeutic support. Alpha-theta is usually not the first step in trauma work, but a complementary building block within a well-coordinated process.
